GAINESVILLE, Fla. – University of Florida women’s tennis standouts McCartney Kessler and Marlee Zein were named 2021 All-Americans by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) as the organization announced its NCAA Division I honors Monday afternoon. Kessler earned the All-American accolade in singles and doubles while Zein collected a doubles designation.
Kessler and Zein become the 57th and 58th players in program history to garner All-American recognition. Florida’s lengthy list is the longest in the Southeastern Conference and its storied women’s tennis program has now racked up 140 All-American honors.
Kessler’s 2021 season was nothing short of sensational as the Georgia native led the Gators with an 18-3 overall record including a 14-2 mark in dual match play. The three-time All-SEC honoree, finished No. 8 in the ITA singles rankings and qualified for her second-straight NCAA appearance in the individual singles tournament after she was assigned the event’s No. 8 overall seed. Kessler, who wrapped up the regular season on a seven-match winning streak, collected seven victories over ranked opponents and her steady performance helped the Gators secure seven-straight wins to close out the year.
In doubles, Kessler’s impact was just as significant. Starring alongside Zein, Kessler helped set the tone from Florida’s top position. The Gator duo registered an overall record of 16-8 which included an 11-6 mark during the dual match slate. After beginning the season at No. 32 in the ITA doubles rankings, the tandem rose to as high as No. 2 following a nine-match winning streak. Kessler and Zein’s winning streak was the longest by any Florida duo since 2017 when Josie Kuhlman and Belinda Woolcock secured 12-consecutive victories.
In the final rankings, Kessler and Zein finished No. 7 in the nation. They notched six wins over ranked foes including four victories over opponents ranked in the top 15. The duo represented the Gators in the NCAA Individual Championships, advancing to the round of 16 in Orlando last month. The two Gators earned the tournament’s No. 6 overall seed.
The criteria for ITA All-America honors include earning a top 16 seed into the NCAA Singles Championship, advancing to the round of 16 at the NCAA Championship or finishing in the top 20 of the final Oracle/ITA Singles Rankings. All-America recognition is awarded to doubles teams that earn a top eight seed into the NCAA Championship, reach the NCAA Championship quarterfinals or finish in the top 10 in the final Oracle/ITA National Doubles Rankings.
